A few different people have asked me lately, "what do you do?"
Worryingly one of those was my wife, so to inform and educate her and anyone else who is curious: I help develop people and organisations! The next question is usually “yeah, but what do you actually do?!”
So… this is what I actually do!
One to one stuff:
For individuals I tend to work on a one-to-one basis to help them work through issues and to develop new skills or knowledge & understanding via a personalised training package which I design based upon their stated needs.
Some want to understand and build their personal resilience or confidence levels whilst others need to design a new CV, deliver presentations or work on their conflict management technique; topic and duration varies from person to person!
I therefore offer coaching, mentoring and one to one training as long as I am qualified or experienced enough or to help with their requirements.
Organisational stuff:
When working with organisations it tends to be either consultancy support around management, learning and development of staff or design and delivery of bespoke training products. Usually a bit of both.
Most of the courses I have written and delivered focus on management and leadership development or personal resilience and stress management although I have delivered coaching and mentoring inputs, design & delivery of training and presentation skills courses, PDR training and a whole lot more. Most of my delivery is classroom based but I also deliver remote sessions and a range of web-based services (especially lately!)
I have also been asked to work on personal development plans with a group of staff and mangers within organisations so I blend my coaching and development skills to help design and monitor these plans with the individuals over a defined period of time.
Sometimes my work veers away from development activities and I have been asked to redesign processes or procedures usually around Learning and Development or HR functions and I have also supported a number of disciplinary investigations and provided mediation services when required.
Why?
Arguably more important than what I do is the why?
That’s easy – because I love helping people! I have worked in training and development for over 20 years and I get a kick from helping people grow and develop themselves. I don’t know why, it’s just one of my primary drivers. Yes of course I have bills to pay but I price my services fairly and extremely reasonably as I don’t think this kind of thing should cost the Earth.
Ultimately, I designed Lantern to enable me to do more of what I love because I firmly believe that you are at your best when you are happy, satisfied and challenged but ultimately enjoying what you do. If I can help someone else and enjoy myself whilst I’m doing it then as far as I can see, that’s a win-win situation!
